About
Zen Moments are the small things that make a huge difference…
Zen Moments happen at times when we stop pushing to try to get somewhere else, when we open our hearts and minds to the present moment, to that which is right in front of us…
Zen Moments are the moments of magic, when extraordinary awareness meets ordinary situations – moments of looking with fresh eyes…
Such moments can be beautiful, inspiring, transforming, haunting, and can linger with us long after they have passed.
We hope you will find beauty and inspiration in these pages.
Zen Moments – the Story So Far…
Zen Moments began in August 2008. We wanted to have something beautiful to do together, something web-based that we could work on together, even when apart. We loved the thinking and design behind the wonderful blog Zen Habits and thought the idea of user-generated content on the website Not Always Right (which features funny customer service stories) could be applied to something deeper and more inspiring.
So we decided to gather inspiring stories of the power of Awareness. These would be stories of the magic that happens when we stop pushing to try to get somewhere else, when we open our eyes and hearts to the present moment, to that which right is in front of us… inspiring moments of humour, insight, wisdom or compassion.
We were fortunate to find that such a wonderful domain name was available, and in one rather intense weekend in late August 2008, Zen Moments was born. We sought permission to reproduce some of our favourite stories, wrote some articles of our own, and were able to make use of beautiful Creative Commons images from www.flickr.com to illustrate the site.
Although we felt that we had a great idea, we thought that it would take months for Zen Moments to get known about.
But after only three weeks online, Zen Moments was discovered by Stumbleupon.com and before we knew what had hit us, one of our stories landed at the top of the front page of Reddit.com. That simple story by Kent Nerburn – The Cab Ride I’ll Never Forget – seemed to strike a chord with people, and interest mushroomed as it was discussed on forums and linked to by sites from all around the world.
In its first 4 months, Zen Moments had over half a million page views, The Cab Ride had over 200,000 views and many of the other posts had over 20,000 views.
We are also linked to by over 1300 blogs and websites.
It has been very encouraging to have received so much enthusiastic feedback from our visitors. We have a thriving Facebook presence and post regularly on Twitter, and have over 500 regular subscribed readers. Interest is growing all the time, and we receive a steady stream of contributed articles and suggestions. From these, we try to release a new post every two or three days.
We have recently begun a Zen Moments Bookstore powered by Amazon.com, and commission from book sales goes to support Zen Moments.
It makes us feel very glad and privileged to be able to bring into being something that inspires people. In these times of unrest and uncertainty, it is good to be reminded of the wonderful.
Please let your friends and loved ones know about Zen Moments. If you would like to contribute a story or let us know of one, send beautiful photos or help out in other ways, please click here.
