It all sounds so great…and true….and inspirational, but these stories are never written by someone who has failed, and no one comes to hear them speak. I never believed my parents when they said “everything would work out. Everything will be fine” they’d say. How do they know that? How could they be so sure? So my advice…..I don’t know. How about, follow what’s in your heart? Oh and by the way, my parents were right…

I saw a video of this speech months ago and loved it. I’m from an Asian-American family with strong social pressures, so this advice is especially liberating for me. I regret that I didn’t understand the profoundness of this advice when I was 18 (or better yet, when I was 14) … it would have changed my life. Nonetheless, I also recognize that I can put it into practice now — and I have to look at all the subtle ways, subconsciously, that I’m living “someone elses” life.
